Mohali, Oct 7: The district administration has allowed residents to burst only green firecrackers for two hours on Diwali night. According to prohibitory orders issued by District Magistrate Komal Mittal, only environment-friendly crackers that do not contain harmful chemicals like barium salts, antimony, lithium, mercury, arsenic, lead, or strontium chromate will be permitted.
The order also bans the manufacture, stocking, sale, and use of series or chain fireworks (laris) across the district. Only licensed traders will be allowed to sell the approved crackers, while e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart have been barred from accepting or delivering firecracker orders within Mohali.
Violators will face penal action under Section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and other applicable laws. The directions will remain in force from October 1, 2025, to January 2, 2026.
Meanwhile, to strengthen environmental monitoring, the administration has launched a stubble burning control room dashboard — a web, mobile, and desktop-based system that integrates real-time data from multiple sources. Developed by district informatics officers Sarita (Mohali) and Akshaye Kumar (Sangrur), the dashboard will help authorities track and respond swiftly to incidents of stubble burning.
