Chandigarh, October 16, 2025: Three people lost their lives in separate hit-and-run incidents across the Chandigarh tricity region in the past 24 hours.
In Chandigarh, a 19-year-old college student was killed and her younger sister critically injured after a speeding Mahindra Thar hit them while they were waiting for an auto near Dev Samaj College in Sector 46 around 3 pm on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Sijaf, 19, and her sister Isha, 17, were residents of Burail. Eyewitnesses said the Thar came at high speed, lost control, and hit the two sisters before fleeing the spot. Locals rushed them to GMCH, Sector 32, where doctors declared Sijaf dead on arrival. Isha remains in critical condition.
Sijaf’s father, Saved, said his daughter was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at Dev Samaj College and was also training at a local beauty parlour. “She was waiting for an auto with her sister when the Thar hit them and sped away,” he said.
Police said a case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace the driver.
In Mohali, two men were killed in separate hit-and-run crashes on Tuesday.
In the first case, Anil Kumar, 31, was hit by a speeding car near Lalru bus stand while waiting for an auto with his brother-in-law. He was rushed to Dera Bassi civil hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A case under Sections 106 and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the unidentified driver.
In another incident near Gharuan, 72-year-old Harcharan Singh died after a car rammed into his scooter around 4.30 pm on Tuesday. His grandson, who was accompanying him, said the car, bearing registration number CH01-BA-4062, sped away after the collision.
Police have registered cases in both incidents and are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the vehicles involved.
