Chandigarh, November 7: BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday against Punjab Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and Congress candidate Karanvir Burj, accusing them of deliberately desecrating Sikh imagery during the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll campaign.
Chugh objected to a public meeting where a banner showed the revered Sikh warrior Baba Jeevan Singh Ji carrying the sacred head of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji alongside images of six Congress leaders. “This act is a blatant attempt to politicise religion and constitutes a serious violation of the Model Code of Conduct and Section 123(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” Chugh said.
He demanded that the ECI issue a show-cause notice to both leaders and bar them from further campaigning in the constituency. Chugh also called on the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer to investigate the matter urgently and register cases against Bajwa and Burj immediately.
“The use of religious symbols for electoral gain cannot be tolerated,” Chugh added, emphasizing the need for swift action to protect the sanctity of Sikh imagery during elections
