Tarn Taran, November 14: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu has won the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll, defeating Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) contender Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa by 12,091 votes, election officials said on Friday.

Counting, which began at 8 a.m. at the International College of Nursing in Piddi, concluded after 16 rounds.

Sandhu maintained a steady lead throughout the process, securing 42,649 votes. Randhawa finished second with 30,558 votes. Independent candidate Mandeep Singh, backed by the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), polled 19,620 votes, while Congress candidate Karanbir Singh Burj and BJP’s Harjit Singh Sandhu received 15,078 and 6,239 votes respectively. A total of 15 candidates contested the bypoll.

The seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June. Polling on Tuesday recorded a turnout of 60.95%.

“The result reflects continued support for AAP in Tarn Taran,” a party official said.

Analysts noted that the victory helps the ruling party maintain its presence in the region amid a competitive multi-party contest.
