Chandigarh/Amritsar, 9 October 2024: In a major crackdown on trans-border drug networks, Punjab Police seized five kg of heroin and arrested three individuals in Ajnala, Amritsar district, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav announced on Wednesday.

The operation, based on intelligence, also led to the recovery of ₹3.95 lakh in drug money, according to Police.

An FIR under the NDPS Act has been registered, and investigations are ongoing to uncover further connections.

Earlier this month, Punjab Police dismantled an international drug syndicate, arresting two operatives and recovering 1.5 kg of heroin hidden in jackets. The arrested suspects, Sukhdeep Singh from Faridkot and Krishan from Rohtak, used a Hyundai Aura disguised as a taxi to transport the drugs.

Preliminary investigations revealed ties with an Afghan national in Delhi and involvement with Kotkapura-based drug smuggler Lakhwinder Singh, who is believed to be a key figure in the network.

Singh, facing multiple NDPS cases, has reportedly orchestrated heroin smuggling operations over the past two months, including a recent 10 kg consignment delivered in Moga.

Punjab’s 553-km border with Pakistan presents major challenges in combating smuggling, with the Border Security Force (BSF) guarding the region around the clock, police added.
