Chennai, Dec1: At least 11 people, including a child, were killed and 60 others injured when two Tamil Nadu government buses collided head-on near Kummangudi in Sivaganga district on Sunday evening, police said.

The accident occurred around five kilometres from Pillaiyarpatti in the Tirupattur area. Tamil Nadu Police Chief said, “Eleven people, including a child, were killed in a road accident in Sivaganga district.”

One bus was travelling from Tiruppur to Karaikudi, while the other was heading from Karaikudi to Dindigul. Pictures from the scene showed the driver’s side of one bus completely ripped off. Videos captured passengers lying on the ground, and a woman jumping from the front of a bus with its windshield shattered. Another woman was seen sitting, blood streaming from her forehead.

Fellow passengers and bystanders helped pull several victims from the wreckage. Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities said details on the cause of the crash and the condition of those hospitalised are awaited.

This marks the second major head-on collision in southern Tamil Nadu within a week. Last week, six people were killed in Tenkasi district when two private buses collided. Officials had then cited reckless driving as a potential cause.
