Patiala, Dec 22: Former IPS officer Amar Singh Chahal, an accused in the 2015 Faridkot firing case, is in critical condition after an alleged suicide attempt at his residence on Monday, police said.
Chahal sustained a serious chest injury and was rushed to Park Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Doctors have not declared him dead, officials said.
Police said a note recovered from the spot refers to financial distress, allegedly linked to an online fraud. An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Varun Sharma said police teams rushed to Chahal’s house immediately after receiving information.
“As soon as we received information about a bullet being fired, our teams rushed to his residence and he was taken to the hospital in a very critical condition,” Sharma said.
Chahal, a former deputy inspector general of police, is among the accused in the 2015 Faridkot firing case. In February 2023, a Punjab Police Special Investigation Team filed a chargesheet naming him along with several political leaders and senior police officers.
Police said further details would emerge once the probe is completed.
