Phagwara, Jan 18: A 71-year-old retired police sub-inspector allegedly took his own life on Sunday at his residence in the Guru Nanak Pura locality of Phagwara. The deceased, identified as Karamjit Singh, had served in the force until his retirement in 2015.
Local police officials mentioned that Singh appeared to have used his licensed firearm to carry out the act. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, and the body was subsequently transported to a local facility for a post-mortem examination.
Superintendent of Police Madhvi Sharma reached the spot to oversee the initial investigation. Preliminary findings noted that Singh had recently been served with legal summons related to a criminal case dating back to 1992. While no suicide note was recovered from the premises, authorities are investigating whether the pressure of the decades-old legal matter contributed to his decision.
“A preliminary inquiry shows that he was involved in a criminal case of 1992 and had recently received legal summons,” a police official said regarding the potential motive behind the incident.
Investigators are currently in the process of recording statements from the grieving family members to gather more details about Singh’s mental state in the days leading up to the tragedy. The police noted that the investigation remains ongoing to rule out any other possibilities.
