High Court hears arguments on evidence anomalies

Ram Rahim’s legal team claims weapon and bullet mismatch

Chandigarh, Feb 5: The Punjab and Haryana High Court was informed on Thursday that the ballistic links used to convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh are inconsistent with the physical evidence. Senior advocates representing the appellant argued that the size and nature of the bullets recovered did not match the revolver allegedly used in the crime.

Central to the defense’s argument is the claim that the prosecution’s timeline for evidence examination is physically impossible. They noted that the bullet recovered in November 2002 at AIIMS was produced in court nearly nine years later still bearing the original hospital seals.

The defense mentioned that the prosecution must account for how an FSL expert could conduct a study on a bullet that remained officially sealed in a container.

“The prosecution’s claim of prior ballistic examination is self-defeating,” the defense said, adding that the inconsistencies strike at the root of the case.

The Bench was also told that the signatures allegedly placed on the evidence by experts were suspect. While the prosecution maintained that markings were made on the revolver and the bullet, the defense argued that a tiny, fired bullet could not physically carry such engravings.

The hearing involved several senior advocates and representatives from the CBI. Ram Rahim is currently appealing the conviction and life sentence handed down over seven years ago for the murder of the Sirsa-based journalist.
