AMRITSAR, Feb 21 — The Punjab Police averted a significant security threat early Saturday morning after discovering an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted behind the Rayya police post. The recovery, made under the jurisdiction of the Beas police station, prompted an immediate large-scale security operation in the district.
The bomb disposal squad was called to the scene and successfully defused the explosive, preventing any damage or casualties. SSP Amritsar Rural Sohail Qasim Mir stated that the device was placed with the intent to blow up the police facility. He noted that while the threat was neutralized, no specific terror organization or gangster group has yet claimed responsibility for the act.
Authorities were first alerted to the presence of a suspicious object outside the post at approximately 10 pm on Friday. Following the confirmation that the object was indeed an IED, security agencies cordoned off the entire perimeter and initiated an intensive search of the surrounding areas to ensure no other hazards were present.
The SSP affirmed that a thorough investigation is currently under way to identify the individuals behind the conspiracy. “Further investigation was under way,” the official added, noting that preliminary information suggests the device was intended to cause a major terror incident in the border region.
