CHANDIGARH, March 4: A landmark achievement for the Indian sporting community — endurance cyclist Kanwar Gill has become the first individual from Punjab to secure all major honors under the prestigious international Audax system. The cyclist’s success at the national and global levels marks a substantial chapter for the state’s burgeoning presence in long-distance sports.

A former student of The Punjab Public School, Nabha, Gill demonstrated his athletic potential early in his career. During his academic years, he served as the athletics captain and earned the title of Best Boxer, laying the foundation for the discipline required in high-intensity sports. His transition into professional cycling saw him successfully finish the Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) race in 2023, an event widely regarded as one of the oldest and most grueling endurance competitions in the world.

Through years of rigorous training, Gill has amassed a collection of rare accolades, including 42 Super Randonneur (SR) titles recognized by the Audax Club Parisien. He has also earned the R5000 and R10000 medals, alongside International Super Randonneur recognition. Perhaps his most notable achievement is the Lepertail LRM Award, presented by Les Randonneurs Mondiaux.

The Lepertail LRM Award is considered among the most difficult honors in the sport, requiring a cyclist to complete official rides of 1,200 kilometers or more for four consecutive years. These regulations further dictate that at least two of these rides must be completed in different countries. Gill’s successful navigation of these requirements affirmed his status as a premier global randonneur.

State sports enthusiasts maintained that Gill’s journey serves as a major inspiration for the youth of Punjab. His achievements are a testament to extraordinary endurance and a lifelong passion for the sport. Analysts noted that this historic success is not merely a personal milestone but a proud moment for the entire regional sports community, demonstrating that discipline and a refusal to abandon one’s goals can lead to international acclaim.
