Kapurthala, March 19: The Punjab Government has announced the establishment of the Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji State Institute of Medical Sciences in Kapurthala, marking the second major medical education project unveiled this month. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh stated on Thursday that the facility will be constructed at the existing District Hospital complex with a total investment of ₹275 crore.

The project follows the recent announcement of a similar institute in Hoshiarpur and aligns with the state’s objective to strengthen public healthcare. Dr Balbir Singh affirmed that the tendering process is complete and work orders have been issued, with construction slated to finish by March 2028. The new campus will span over 5 lakh square feet and include a 300-bed hospital alongside a medical college with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students.

The Health Minister maintained that the initiative would ensure local students have access to affordable medical education within the state. He declared that the institute would provide advanced secondary and tertiary care while generating significant employment. According to official estimates, the project is expected to create direct jobs for over 1,000 individuals and numerous indirect opportunities for the region.

To support the new medical college, the government plans to upgrade the Government Hospital in Sultanpur Lodhi as an urban center and the facility in Begowal as a rural center. Dr Balbir Singh asserted that the institute will be equipped with modern diagnostic tools, including MRI and CT scan facilities, six major operation theatres, and a 500-capacity auditorium. The Minister was joined by senior health officials, including Principal Secretary Kumar Rahul, during the announcement.
