Kapurthala, April 9: The Kapurthala police have registered a case of culpable homicide following the death of a 25-year-old youth, identified as Shali, who allegedly died from a drug overdose in Bholath. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning after the victim, who had recently returned from Mumbai, was taken from his home by four associates from the same village.

According to DSP Bholath Karnail Singh, the victim’s parents reported that Shali returned home in a state of severe intoxication after spending the morning with his friends. The youth managed to disclose to his family that he had consumed intoxicants before his condition deteriorated. He was rushed to a local hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. “The four associates allegedly administered an intoxicating substance to him, which ultimately led to his death,” the DSP stated.

Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Tura affirmed that a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against one of the victim’s friends for allegedly administering a lethal dose. The SSP noted that while other friends also consumed the narcotic substance, Shali’s reaction was significantly more severe. A post-mortem examination is currently underway to determine the exact nature of the intoxicant used.

The tragedy comes amid a series of drug-related incidents in the district, following the cremation of Sonu, the fifth son of Manjeet Kaur, who also died due to addiction-related complications this week. Additionally, police have reported the death of another resident, Balbir Singh, a former addict; however, his cause of death has not been confirmed as drug-related. Authorities maintained that they are intensifying their crackdown on local trafficking networks to prevent further loss of life.
