NEW YORK, MAY 6 — A video capturing an unprovoked assault on an elderly Sikh taxi driver in New York City has triggered widespread condemnation across social media and within the Sikh community. The footage, which began circulating this week, depicts a man, identified in reports as African-American, shouting at the driver before forcefully pushing him to the pavement during a roadside dispute.

The altercation reportedly began when the assailant accused the elderly driver of colliding with another vehicle. In the video, the man is heard leveling threats against the driver before the physical confrontation occurred. While the victim sustained visible injuries from the fall, community updates stated that he is recovering and remains in “good spirits.”

“The vulnerable position of Sikh drivers, many of whom are immigrants and senior citizens, is a matter of grave concern,” a spokesperson for a prominent Sikh advocacy group stated. The organization affirmed that the level of violence used against an elderly individual is unacceptable and called for the perpetrator to be identified and prosecuted.

The incident follows a similar hate-motivated attack on April 22 in Woodstock, Ontario, where another elderly Sikh man, Shingara Singh, was targeted. Sikh leaders noted that these recurring incidents have heightened fears among community members who work in public-facing roles. While New York authorities have not yet released a formal statement, local community leaders maintained that they are pushing for a full investigation into the matter to ensure the safety of minority drivers in the city.
