Amritsar, May 8: Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan is scheduled to appear at the Sri Akal Takht Secretariat on Friday to address theological and legal concerns regarding the recently enacted Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Act (Amendment) 2026. The meeting with Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj follows a formal invitation intended to bridge the gap between government legislation and Panthic sentiment.
While the state administration has maintained that the law was passed unanimously on April 13 to protect religious sanctity, several Sikh organizations and legal experts have voiced significant reservations. These groups, following a recent assembly of scholars, stated that the law requires broader Panthic consent before it can be fully accepted by the community.
“Mr. Sandhwan will appear before the Jathedar at the Secretariat of Sri Akal Takht at around 11 am,” an official source confirmed regarding the day’s proceedings.
In a separate move, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami recently convened a meeting of granthis and management committee representatives. The group affirmed that they would abide by any directive issued by the Akal Takht, though they suggested that the government should reconsider and potentially amend specific provisions of the act to align with traditional protocols.
The Secretariat is also expected to host representatives from the Chief Khalsa Diwan later in the afternoon. Officials noted that these members were summoned for 1 pm to clarify matters regarding the Amritdhari status of the organization’s leadership, an issue that has seen prior inquiry.
Speaker Sandhwan’s visit is viewed as a critical step in addressing the doubts of the Sangat. By appearing at the highest temporal seat of the Sikh faith, the Speaker aims to provide the necessary legal and administrative context to satisfy the religious leadership.
