New Delhi, July 21: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi declared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi owes an apology to the nation’s youth following a police baton-charge on peaceful student demonstrators. Speaking to reporters after the incident, Gandhi maintained that the physical assault on young protesters was entirely un-Indian and questioned the Prime Minister’s continued silence on the matter. He asserted that the administration resorted to excessive force instead of engaging with the legitimate grievances of the students.
Following a meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla alongside several Opposition MPs to demand a formal parliamentary discussion on the police action, Gandhi stated that the Speaker declined to permit an immediate debate. The Congress leader claimed that the Speaker expressed the need to obtain clearance from the central government before allowing the issue to be raised on the floor of the House. Gandhi expressed deep concern over the response, maintaining that parliamentary proceedings should remain independent of executive approval.
Addressing the ongoing concerns surrounding the examination system, Gandhi declared that the testing framework requires fundamental reforms and accountability. In a related statement, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the heavy-handed approach of the security forces, asserting that the administration must listen to the concerns of the youth rather than deploying force against peaceful citizens.
