NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH, AUGUST 9: The Supreme Court Collegium has officially recommended the elevation of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he currently serves as Acting Chief Justice. The proposal was finalized during the Collegium meeting held on August 6, marking a significant transition in the leadership of the high court.
Justice Mishra has been steering the administration of the court since June 1, 2026, when he assumed the charge of Acting Chief Justice. The position became vacant after former Chief Justice Sheel Nagu was elevated to the Supreme Court. Prior to taking charge of the court’s administrative helm, Justice Mishra had joined the Punjab and Haryana High Court on July 21, 2025, following his transfer from the Allahabad High Court.
His judicial career spans over a decade, beginning with his appointment as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on February 3, 2014, before being made a permanent judge on February 1, 2016. Before his elevation to the bench, Justice Mishra established a distinguished legal practice following his advocate enrollment on May 8, 1993, specializing in civil, constitutional, and service matters. He regularly represented key statutory bodies—such as NOIDA, the Ghaziabad Development Authority, IFFCO, and Indian Oil Corporation—and acted as senior counsel for the state government in several prominent cases.
An alumnus of Delhi University, Justice Mishra earned his BA (Honours) degree in Economics from Kirori Mal College before obtaining his law degree from the Campus Law Centre. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2013 in recognition of his extensive work at the bar.
