Russia has initiated preliminary evaluations for a major overland railway corridor connecting to the Indian Ocean, aiming to bypass vulnerable maritime passages and secure reliable trade routes with India. The strategic proposal seeks to mitigate operational exposure to critical shipping chokepoints, particularly the Bosphorus and the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing regional geopolitical tensions.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin affirmed that alternative transit routes need active exploration to protect international trade flows. Potential transit pathways under review could extend through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Any viable network option providing direct freight access to Indian markets would be considered acceptable by Moscow, he maintained.
The initiative comes against the backdrop of heightened maritime disruptions along traditional sea lanes that handle significant volumes of global energy and commercial cargo. If realized, the continuous land-based rail freight connection would establish a major alternative overland route between Russia and South Asia.
Parallel to international logistics planning, domestic infrastructure expansion remains a priority for Moscow. Khusnullin declared that Russia’s building sector possesses the immediate capacity to absorb an additional one trillion rubles in annual investment, asserting that guaranteed long-term financing over five years would allow the construction industry to scale up its operational scope significantly.
