LEH, AUGUST 13: A moderate 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck early in the morning in the Leh district of Ladakh, causing noticeable tremors across the region. Officials confirmed that no casualties or major structural damage have been recorded following the incident.
The National Centre for Seismology reported that the earthquake hit around 6.05 am at a depth of ten kilometres. In an official communication, the agency stated, “EQ of M: 5.5, On: 13/08/2026 06:05:15 IST, Lat: 36.881 N, Long: 74.402 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh.”
Seismologists noted that shallow earthquakes generally create stronger ground shaking near the epicenter because the seismic energy travels a shorter distance to reach the surface. Despite the potential risk associated with shallow tremors, local administrative reports indicate that the region remained largely unaffected and the overall situation continues to be calm.
