GURUGRAM, August 25: A significant section of the service road at IFFCO Chowk caved in on Monday following heavy rainfall, crippling traffic at one of Gurugram’s most critical transit hubs. Preliminary investigations point to a structural failure in the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority’s (GMDA) main sewer line, which runs directly beneath the collapsed tarmac, as the primary trigger for the sub-surface erosion.
“Monday’s cave-in fits the same broader pattern seen elsewhere in the city,” authorities noted, identifying a chronic urban planning issue where utility lines laid under major roads without adequate backfilling or routine maintenance routinely give way during intense monsoon spells.
Traffic police deployed emergency teams to the junction immediately after the collapse, establishing temporary barricades and diverting vehicles onto alternative routes to prevent serious accidents. While GMDA officials have been formally notified of the structural failure, the authority has not yet issued an official statement outlining repair timelines or confirming whether a full inspection of the underlying sewer network has commenced.
The incident highlights a persistent structural hazard for the city’s commuters, as loose sub-base earth and compromised drainage lines continue to threaten the stability of the junction’s surface infrastructure.
