Chandigarh, August 26: Chandigarh is set to nearly double its artificial intelligence-enabled CCTV network, expanding coverage from the existing 2,130 cameras to around 4,200 across the Union Territory. The expansion plan, which covers 68 additional automated traffic control locations, was evaluated during a UT Advisory Standing Committee meeting on Law and Order chaired by Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu.
Discussing the technological overhaul, Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu stated that Chandigarh possesses the institutional capability to set a national benchmark for smart and citizen-centric urban policing. He affirmed that the objective extends beyond merely adding cameras, maintaining that predictive analytics, real-time data, and automated identification systems should actively prevent crime and accelerate emergency response times across the city.
The committee reiterated its proposal to establish a Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security Practices in collaboration with Panjab University to foster academic-police research in cybercrime, behavioral studies, and traffic management. To complement technical enforcement, the panel suggested a socio-economic study of repeat offenders from a database of over 8,000 individuals to support targeted rehabilitation, skill development, and mainstreaming interventions.
Administrative reviews also covered streamlined regulatory frameworks for study and immigration consultants, data-backed road safety strategies to reduce traffic fatalities, and strengthened Tricity coordination among Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula police units. The committee praised Chandigarh Police for proactive enforcement and urged continued integration of data, artificial intelligence, and social interventions to elevate urban public safety standards.
