Chandigarh, August 26: Growing concern has surfaced among medical aspirants and parents over a mandatory requirement seeking two immovable-property sureties worth 20 lakh rupees each alongside a 20-lakh rupee service bond for admission to government medical colleges in Punjab. The issue affects students allotted seats at government medical institutions in Patiala, Amritsar, Faridkot, and Mohali ahead of the admission reporting schedule.
Evaluating the operational framework, parents maintained that securing a government medical seat should depend strictly on NEET merit rather than a family’s property holdings. Representatives asserted that requiring 40 lakh rupees in property backing disproportionately burdens middle-income and Economically Weaker Section families, who may lack two separate registered properties despite qualifying on academic merit.
Under the existing notification, candidates admitted to state institutions must complete compulsory post-internship service—two years for State Quota entrants and one year for All-India Quota students. The service bond requires two sureties, typically parents or guardians, to furnish property valuations that remain encumbered for up to seven and a half years.
Addressing the rising concern, Director of Medical Education and Research Dr. Avinish Kumar stated that the state government is adhering to judicial directions and noted that alternative options beyond property documentation are available for candidates to submit the required surety. Parents have called upon the state government and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences to issue immediate clarifications to ensure no candidate is turned away.
