MOHALI — Aam Aadmi Party legislator Kulwant Singh from Mohali declared today that he will bear the full medical education expenses of three meritorious students from economically disadvantaged families who recently qualified the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.
The announcement follows a report published by the Punjabi Tribune on September 1, titled “Dreams shattered by fees,” which brought light to the financial hardships faced by aspiring candidates and prompted nearly two dozen donors to offer assistance.
The Mohali legislator contacted the newspaper to confirm his commitment to provide approximately 30.5 lakh rupees toward tuition, hostel fees, and other academic requirements across their five-year medical programs.
The funding structure will involve direct semester payments deposited into the students’ respective bank accounts, based on fee breakdowns shared by their schoolteacher, Manjit Singh.
Among the beneficiaries, Mehakdeep Singh from Alamwala village in Sri Muktsar Sahib secured admission at Gian Sagar Medical College, where total costs amount to 32 lakh rupees.
With an 11 lakh rupee scholarship available due to his Scheduled Caste status and a 7.5 lakh rupee loan arranged, Kulwant Singh will cover the remaining 13.5 lakh rupees, relieving the family after they previously sold a cow to finance initial costs.
The legislator maintained that similar financial coverage will extend to Aman Singh of Malout, an Other Backward Class student enrolled at the Medical College of Faridkot, whose father works in an iron factory.
The MLA will take responsibility for Aman’s full tuition and hostel expenses, totaling roughly 14 lakh rupees.
Furthermore, Sumandeep Kaur from Hauz Gandhar village in Fazilka, who has already paid her initial admission fee and qualifies for a Dalit scholarship, will have her 3 lakh rupee hostel fee settled by the lawmaker.
Expressing gratitude for the intervention, the parents affirmed that the support grants a fresh lease of life to their children’s professional aspirations.
Kulwant Singh stated that hardworking youth represent the future capital of Punjab, assuring that financial constraints will not be allowed to dim the prospects of dedicated scholars in the state.
