NEW DELHI: Six people have died following the sudden collapse of a five-storey boys’ hostel in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area. Emergency personnel pulled eleven individuals alive from the rubble, working continuously through Monday morning to clear heavy material and check for any remaining victims trapped beneath the wreckage.
The fifty-year-old structure caved in on Sunday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the densely populated neighborhood situated near Delhi University’s South Campus. Visuals from the scene on Monday showed search crews navigating the unstable pile as emergency operations entered a critical phase.
Administrative personnel have initiated broad safety measures across the immediately affected street. Technicians erected iron jacks alongside Buildings 12 and 13 to stabilize their frames, preventing secondary structural failures while heavy machinery operates nearby.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi issued formal notices to four neighboring properties as a protective step. Senior leadership, including Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, and local representative Anil Sharma, conducted on-site evaluations on Monday to direct response teams and coordinate welfare assistance.
The incident has drawn attention to structural integrity standards across Satya Niketan, a district heavily populated by student housing units and private student accommodations.
