PHAGWARA, OCT 2 — Kapurthala police have taken nine individuals into custody, including seven university students and two local delivery workers, in connection with violent protests, arson, and highway blockades at Lovely Professional University on September 27 and 28.
Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla declared during a media briefing that law enforcement teams evaluated extensive digital evidence, including campus CCTV footage, broadcast news, and social media posts, to identify forty individuals linked to the disturbance. Among those apprehended is a juvenile student from Himachal Pradesh whose image atop a campus MIG-23 aircraft became widely circulated during the unrest. Authorities stated that the accused face charges involving property damage, robbery, arson, and unprovoked assaults on police personnel under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and state property protection laws.
Police officials affirmed that a Special Investigation Team is actively searching for additional suspects, including former student and social media influencer Farhat Dev. Officers noted that while several individuals participated in peaceful demonstrations during daytime hours, specific groups engaged in nocturnal violence and destruction across the campus and adjacent areas.
Simultaneously, investigators maintained that inquiries are proceeding regarding the underlying incident that sparked the unrest, with officers continuing to question university staff and students to establish all facts.
