NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH, OCT 2 — Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to meet outgoing Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring in New Delhi today to finalize the appointment of the new state unit chief.
Warring, the Ludhiana MP, arrived in the national capital following a call from Gandhi’s office. Sources indicated that the outgoing chief’s recommendations will be given significant weight as the party leadership seeks to finalize the successor. While Warring recently updated his social media profiles to reflect his transition from the role, close aides clarified that no formal resignation was requested or submitted, stating that the change of guard was mutually communicated.
Party insiders suggested that the Congress leadership is contemplating appointing a leader from the Hindu community to head the Punjab unit, moving away from the conventional choice of a Jat Sikh face. Leaders including former Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rana KP Singh and former minister Vijay Inder Singla have emerged as prominent contenders for the position.
Following the initial discussion with Warring, Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to hold a broader consultative session with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and All India Congress Committee in-charge of Punjab affairs Sachin Pilot to complete the selection process.
