Chandigarh, Oct 8: The Punjab government has announced the launch of the ‘Meri Dukan Mere Ban’ scheme, offering ownership rights to shopkeepers currently running businesses from rented municipal properties across the state.
Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains declared that the initiative will cover rented properties measuring up to 50 square yards under 116 urban local bodies. To qualify for ownership, shopkeepers are required to have operated continuously from the designated municipal space for a minimum period of 12 years and pay prescribed charges based on prevailing collector rates.
The policy aims to resolve long-standing issues surrounding municipal assets, including non-payment of rent and prolonged legal disputes involving local body holdings. Minister Bains affirmed that the state has categorized eligible beneficiaries into three distinct income slabs to facilitate structured fee payments and streamline property transfers across urban centers.
