Paris, Oct 18: Rioting erupted in cities across France as demonstrations against rising living costs and declining public services spiralled out of control in some of the worst violence the country has witnessed for decades. Authorities maintained that approximately 1,200 individuals were taken into custody after clashes broke out in multiple urban centres.
The unrest reached a severe flashpoint in Limoges, where masked demonstrators set fire to the city’s historic 143-year-old town hall. Local officials affirmed that a major portion of the heritage building was severely damaged, with large sections of its roof and bell tower collapsing as emergency crews worked to manage the flames.
Beyond France, demonstrations and related protest actions were reported across Europe, including Portugal, Italy, Belgium, and Albania. Organisers asserted that the coordinated actions reflect growing public frustration over inflation, high energy costs, and reduced spending on essential public services.
French President Emmanuel Macron declared that those responsible for acts of arson, looting, and attacks on public infrastructure will face prosecution. Officials affirmed that law enforcement agencies remain deployed in strength as governments monitor the situation across the continent.
