Chandigarh, Oct 22: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha commenced its high-stakes six-day session on Thursday, with the Opposition preparing to aggressively challenge the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government over the escalating drug trade, the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, prevailing law and order concerns, and various corruption allegations.
Administrative and political tensions remained palpable as state officials maintained that the upcoming House proceedings would address critical legislative priorities. Political analysts affirmed that the contentious debates would likely focus heavily on accountability, public safety, and agrarian policies.
In response to the anticipated pressure, the ruling administration asserted that the deep-rooted drug menace was a legacy of previous regimes. Furthermore, state representatives declared that the inflow of narcotics through ports in Gujarat and across the heavily guarded International Border fell under the purview of central security forces, redirecting scrutiny toward the central government.
Beyond the immediate security debates, the legislative agenda includes moving a formal resolution seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside plans to introduce additional financial relief measures targeted at women across the state. Agrarian concerns also emerged as a central pillar of the session, with the administration declaring intentions to introduce resolutions defending Punjab’s riparian rights over river waters while demanding the complete repeal of the Dam Safety Act.
