Syria Signs New Contract with French Firm to Operate Latakia Port

Damascus, 7 February 2025 – Syria’s General Authority for Land and Sea Ports has signed a new contract with French shipping and logistics company CMA CGM to manage the container terminal at Latakia Port, the agency said.

The agreement introduces updated terms, including modifications to the contract’s duration and revenue-sharing structure, according to a Syrian source cited by Reuters. It also ensures the settlement of outstanding dues by both parties.

CMA CGM, controlled by French-Lebanese billionaire Rodolphe Saadé—who reportedly has Syrian roots—has overseen Latakia’s container terminal since 2009. Its previous contract was renewed in October while Syria remained under the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

The new deal follows the interim government’s consolidation of power after former rebel forces claimed victory on December 8.
