Chandigarh, March 22: Damanpreet Singh, the Aam Aadmi Party councillor from Ward No. 17, joined the Congress on Sunday in a move that marks the second such defection within the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation recently. The transition follows the February 23 induction of councillor Prem Lata and Ritu Chhabra into the party.
While addressing supporters at the Chandigarh Congress Bhawan, Singh stated that the Aam Aadmi Party in the city is currently in a state of disarray. He declared that internal party affairs and major decisions are dictated by leadership in Delhi or Punjab rather than local representatives.
The councillor asserted that he was originally chosen as the party’s mayoral candidate, only to have his name replaced by another individual shortly before the voting process began. Singh affirmed that local leaders lack the authority to make independent decisions within his former party’s structure.
Congress president Harmohinder Singh Lucky welcomed the new induction, noting that many leaders are drawn to the party’s current policies. He expressed a strong belief that the Congress is positioned to sweep all wards in the upcoming Municipal Corporation elections.
“The leaders were impressed by the policies of the party and decided to join it,” Lucky affirmed during the event. The Congress leadership maintained that these shifts indicate a growing momentum for the party ahead of the next civic polls.
