Jalandhar, January 11: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), backed by a clear majority, is set to elect the new mayor on Saturday, but no consensus has been reached on the candidate for the top post.

Several senior councillors, including long-time party members, remain in the running for the mayoral position, as well as the roles of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.

In last month’s Jalandhar municipal corporation elections, AAP emerged as the single largest party with 38 seats in the 85-member House. The Congress followed with 25, the BJP secured 19, while Independents won two wards and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) clinched one.

AAP solidified its majority by gaining the support of two councillors each from the Congress and BJP, along with two Independents, surpassing the required 45-vote mark.

The House also includes voting rights for four MLAs: Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh and Jalandhar North MLA Avtar Singh Bawa Henry (both Congress), and Jalandhar West MLA Mohinder Bhagat and Jalandhar Central MLA Raman Arora (both AAP).

The mayoral and other office-bearer elections will be held at the Red Cross Bhavan in Jalandhar, where the newly elected councillors will also take their oaths.

Party insiders revealed that prominent councillors such as Vaneet Dhir, Dinesh Dhal, Ashwani Aggarwal, Mukesh Sethi, Aruna Arora, and Deepak Sharda are being considered for the top roles.

“The party will elect the Jalandhar mayor unanimously,” a senior leader claimed on the condition of anonymity, adding that AAP’s state president Aman Arora has already held discussions with local MLAs and office-bearers to finalize the candidate.

With just days left, the party is expected to announce its decision soon, ensuring all senior leadership is aligned before Saturday’s critical elections.
