Chandigarh, March 17: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, led by the Prime Minister, has approved a one-year tenure extension for Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur. The formal order, issued on March 16, allows the officer to remain in her current post within the AGMUT cadre beyond her initial three-year deputation period.

The directive, signed by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, confirms the extension of Kaur’s inter-cadre deputation from the Punjab cadre. Although her original term technically expired on March 8, the Chandigarh administration maintained her at the helm of the police force in anticipation of the official federal clearance.

The approval process involved a coordinated series of recommendations from Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, alongside the concurrence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan stated previously that the necessary clearances from the Ministry of Home Affairs had been secured prior to the final committee decision.

Kaur, a 2013-batch IPS officer, assumed the role of Chandigarh SSP in March 2023. She is an alumna of Punjab Engineering College and previously served as the district police chief in Malerkotla, Kapurthala, Nawanshahr, and Ferozepur.

As only the second woman to lead the Chandigarh police force, her continued tenure marks a significant period for the city’s law enforcement. The first woman to hold the position was Nilambri Vijay Jagdale, who served from 2017 to 2020.
