FAZILKA, Nov 27— Twelve days after the killing of Naveen Arora, son of an RSS leader in Ferozepur, the key accused was shot dead in a police encounter near the Mahmu Joyia toll plaza on the Fazilka–Ferozepur road on Thursday morning, officials said.
Police said the shootout erupted at a cremation ground near the toll plaza, where a Ferozepur police team had taken the accused, Badal, for the recovery of weapons. The team was led by a DSP and DSP (D).
SSP Gurmeet Singh said the officers were moving inside the cremation ground when two men already present there opened fire. “One of our head constables, Balaur Singh, suffered injuries when the suspects began firing at the police team,” he said.
Police sources said the team returned fire. In the exchange, Badal — a Ferozepur resident and the main accused in Arora’s murder — was killed, while the two men accompanying him escaped.
Search operations have been launched to trace the fleeing suspects.
