Chandigarh, 29 October 2024: Advocates at the district court have decided to extend their strike until November 4, causing further disruption for numerous litigants.

According to inputs, the strike, which has lasted two weeks, has led to major delays in court proceedings, leaving hundreds of individuals with cases scheduled for this week without legal representation.

During a General House meeting on Monday, the District Bar Association (DBA) president, Advocate Rohit Khullar, discussed the future course of action. Although some members expressed their concerns about the impact of the strike on their clients and personal income, the decision was made to prolong the work stoppage.

One advocate remarked, “Not all DBA members supported the extension of the strike. Many are facing financial losses, and clients are waiting for their applications to be heard, yet cases are only getting adjourned.”

The ongoing strike is a protest against what the advocates perceive as police inaction following the murder of former DBA secretary Neeraj Hans, who was killed on October 7.

Hans, 41, died after sustaining a fatal blow to the chest during a confrontation with other advocates in the parking lot of the District Courts Complex in Sector 43, Chandigarh. He was shifted to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

A senior police official confirmed that three FIRs had been filed in connection with the case, and it has since been transferred to the crime branch for a thorough investigation.

Despite the registration of these FIRs, discussions during the DBA meeting revealed frustration over the lack of concrete police action and the absence of arrests in the case.
