Chandigarh, June 20: The first phase of the National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations—popularly known as “Naksha”—has been successfully completed, with aerial surveys conducted across five villages and 15 sectors of the city.

The initiative, part of the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme, aims to create accurate, digitised maps and land ownership records for urban areas using advanced geospatial technology.

Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Department of Land Resources, Government of India, reviewed the progress of the pilot during a meeting held in the city on Thursday. Officials briefed him on the successful completion of the initial survey and outlined the roadmap for the second phase.

According to officials, a state-level committee, a dedicated state project management unit, and field survey teams have been established to carry out the next phase of the programme. The meeting also included a review of the current status of registration record digitisation to align it with the geospatial mapping initiative.

“‘Naksha’ is being implemented in Chandigarh as a model project to set the framework for geospatial land surveys across urban India,” an official said after the meeting.

The pilot is expected to streamline land governance, reduce disputes, and improve transparency in urban property transactions.
