Hoshiarpur, Feb 28 – Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh met former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami at his residence in Piplanwala, Hoshiarpur, urging him to reconsider his resignation.
Dhami stepped down as SGPC president on February 17 after Akal Takht condemned the gurdwara body’s decision to remove Giani Harpreet Singh as Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib.
Speaking to reporters, Giani Raghbir Singh described his visit as a “personal meeting.” “I came to congratulate the family on the birth of a child after a long time. It was purely a family visit,” he said.
However, he also acknowledged urging Dhami to return as SGPC chief. “He is a virtuous and honest Gursikh. The Akal Takht and SGPC need a leader like him,” he stated.
Asked about the five-member committee’s report on the reorganization of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which mentioned concerns over the party leadership’s reluctance to conduct a membership drive under Akal Takht’s supervision, Giani Raghbir Singh said the matter was “under review.”
On Giani Harpreet Singh’s critical remarks against SGPC and SAD leadership, he said, “He is now free to express his views.”
