AMRITSAR, May 27 — A powerful explosion on a vacant plot near Majitha Road Bypass killed a man on Tuesday, with officials suspecting links to a Pakistan-backed terrorist outfit.
According to police, the man had reportedly arrived at the site to collect a “consignment” when the blast occurred. “The individual was being tracked, and we believe he mishandled the bomb while retrieving it,” said Maninder Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar Rural.
The explosion, which took place in a residential colony, was so severe that both of the man’s arms were severed above the wrists, sources confirmed. Alarmed by the loud noise, nearby residents rushed to the site and alerted authorities.
A police team swiftly reached the location, cordoned off the area, and launched a formal investigation.
DIG Border Range Satinder Singh, who is supervising the probe, said the preliminary findings suggest the involvement of Babar Khalsa, a banned terror group allegedly supported by Pakistan’s ISI. “This act appears to be part of a larger conspiracy to disrupt peace in the region,” DIG Singh said.
Authorities stated they had prior intelligence about the suspect and are currently working to verify his identity and trace possible accomplices. “We have credible evidence linking the deceased to a cross-border terror network,” an official added, without disclosing further details.
The case has raised concerns over renewed attempts by foreign-backed groups to infiltrate and destabilize the border state. Investigations are ongoing.
