Dispur, July 22: Incessant rainfall across Assam has severely worsened the flood situation, taking the overall death toll to 31 following 21 additional fatalities within 24 hours. Disasters officials confirmed that nearly 5.65 lakh people across multiple districts have been impacted by the surging waters, with Sivasagar emerging as the worst-hit region.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited affected areas in Upper Assam to review the ground situation and interact with displaced residents. Speaking to reporters in Sivasagar, the Chief Minister declared that the government will immediately provide an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the families of every deceased person.
“There has been extensive damage caused by the floods,” Sarma maintained during his interaction. “I have assured the affected families that they are not alone in this crisis. Our government is standing with them in every step of rehabilitation and rebuilding of livelihoods.”
Addressing concerns regarding delays in reaching remote villages, Sarma acknowledged that submerged roads have cut off access to several interior habitations, making airdrops unfeasible for now. He asserted that relief distribution will reach all isolated areas as soon as floodwaters begin to recede, while maintaining that proper distribution remains uninterrupted across established relief camps.
