Amritsar, 4 Dec. 24: Police have arrested Narayan Singh Chauda, a resident of Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdaspur, for attempting to shoot Sukhbir Singh Badal while he was serving at the gate of Sri Harmandir Sahib. Chauda, allegedly affiliated with Dal Khalsa and previously convicted in multiple criminal cases, approached the Golden Temple under the pretext of bowing down before launching the attack.
The incident occurred while Sukhbir Singh Badal, declared a “salaryman” by Akal Takht Sahib, was performing service duties in a wheelchair. Chauda hid a pistol in his jacket and moved toward Badal, but alert security personnel intercepted him just as he fired. The bullet struck a wall instead of its intended target.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed the arrest and said the investigation is ongoing, with initial findings pointing to Chauda acting alone. Additional security, including 200 personnel in plain clothes, has been deployed following the attack.
Shiromani Committee President Harjinder Singh Dhami announced a parallel inquiry into the incident. Terming the act as “unfortunate,” Balwinder Singh Bhundar reiterated that the service at Harmandir Sahib would continue uninterrupted.
