New Delhi/Thane, 9 October, 2024: A 24-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly abandoning her sister’s newborn in Thane, Maharashtra, police said Wednesday after the infant was found on a road near a chawl in Kalwa around 6:15 a.m. on Tuesday by passersby, who alerted local authorities.
Police responded quickly, taking custody of the newborn.
With no immediate information about the parents, officers reviewed CCTV footage and followed several leads.
Within six hours, they traced the child’s aunt through technical and intelligence inputs, police spokesperson Shailesh Salvi said.
During questioning, it was revealed that the baby belonged to the woman’s sister, who was receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The aunt was arrested and charged under sections 91 and 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for abandoning the child, police added.
