Chandigarh, January 6 — Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Tuesday expressed concern over recent incidents of violence in the state and said the government must take moral responsibility for maintaining public safety.
Referring to three murder cases reported over the past few days, Bajwa said the incidents had raised serious questions about the prevailing law and order situation. “There is a growing sense of fear among people. Ensuring security and confidence is the primary duty of any government,” he said.
Among the cases cited was the killing of a former kabaddi player in Manuke village, which Bajwa described as “particularly disturbing” due to the manner in which it was carried out. He also referred to the shooting of an Aam Aadmi Party-affiliated sarpanch during a wedding ceremony in Amritsar, and the murder of Congress worker Umarseer Singh alias Sheera Bhinder in Moga district.
“These incidents suggest that criminal elements are becoming increasingly bold. The state machinery must respond firmly and restore deterrence,” Bajwa said, adding that people should feel safe in their homes and public spaces.
The Congress leader said there was a need for stronger policing and closer monitoring of organised crime networks. “Illegal weapons and criminal gangs continue to pose a challenge, and addressing this requires coordinated and sustained action,” he said.
Calling for accountability, Bajwa said the government must undertake a serious review of the situation. “When such incidents occur in quick succession, it becomes important for those in authority to reflect and take responsibility,” he added.
