Chandigarh, Jan 29: The Bharatiya Janata Party established complete control over the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Thursday by winning all three prestigious mayoral posts. Councillor Saurabh Joshi was elected as the new Mayor of Chandigarh, marking a clean sweep for the party in a closely contested electoral battle held at the civic body headquarters.
The election results confirmed the BJP’s dominance as the party successfully secured the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor. In the mayoral race, Saurabh Joshi polled 18 votes to defeat his rivals. Congress candidate Gurpreet Singh Gabbi managed to secure seven votes, while AAP’s Yogesh Dhingra received 11 votes during the polling process.
“The victory reflects the trust in our developmental agenda for the city,” a senior BJP leader mentioned after the results were declared.
The momentum continued for the party in the subsequent rounds of voting. Jasmanpreet Singh was elected Senior Deputy Mayor with 18 votes, and Suman Sharma completed the trio of victories by being elected Deputy Mayor, also securing 18 votes. The proceedings, which began at 11 am, saw a tense face-off between the BJP and the Congress-AAP alliance.
Under the Municipal Corporation Act, the election was conducted through a show of hands. Despite the alliance presenting a combined front, the BJP’s 18 votes, which include the vote of the Member of Parliament, proved decisive in breaking the tie against the opposition’s collective strength.
