Chandigarh, Oct 5: Three individuals lost their lives while 24 others suffered injuries when a private passenger bus carrying university students overturned near Majari village on the Banga-Phagwara National Highway early Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 4:30 AM as the vehicle was traveling from Manali to Amritsar, carrying several students from Lovely Professional University returning from a northern trip. Authorities maintained that the vehicle went off course while descending from the Banga flyover bridge, causing it to flip over and trap passengers inside. Officials affirmed that two of the deceased have been identified as bus conductor Khem Singh and student Jashina Joseph, while identity verification for the third victim remains underway.
Rescue teams and local police arrived promptly to extricate passengers and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities, including the Civil Hospital in Banga and Guru Nanak Mission Hospital in Dahan Kaleran. Emergency responders stated that while 21 individuals received treatment for minor injuries, three passengers sustained serious trauma, with select patients transferred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana for specialized care. Investigators declared that an inquiry is underway to determine the cause of the vehicle’s departure from the lane, while local observers suggested driver fatigue during the early morning hours may have contributed to the crash.
