New Delhi, 14 December 2024: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has moved forward with the government’s “one nation, one election” initiative, approving two key bills related to holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

The legislation strives to bring about structural changes in the electoral process, ensuring that national and state elections coincide.

On Monday, Union Law Minister Meghwal will introduce The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha. The latter seeks to align provisions in laws governing three Union territories with legislative assemblies to match the new constitutional framework.

The proposed amendment would allow for the simultaneous conduct of Lok Sabha and state elections.

While a committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind recommended the phased inclusion of local body elections, such as municipal and panchayat elections, the Cabinet decided not to include them in the immediate plan for synchronized elections.

This significant legislative push marks the government’s effort to implement “one nation, one election,” which, if passed, could reshape the country’s electoral landscape.
