New Delhi, 14 December 2024: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday accused the BJP of “ridiculing” the Constitution while claiming to defend it, citing controversial remarks by Veer Savarkar. Gandhi, speaking during the debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption, pointed out that Savarkar had described the Constitution as “un-Indian” and preferred Manusmriti over it.
“The Constitution is a modern Indian document, but it could never have been written without the ideas of ancient India,” Gandhi said.
He criticized the BJP, asking, “When you claim to defend the Constitution, do you stand by your ideologue’s words?”
Gandhi also condemned the government’s treatment of farmers, referencing the use of tear gas on protesting farmers outside Delhi, who he argued were denied fair prices for their produce.
“You are cutting off the thumb of the farmers just like you are cutting off small businesses with policies benefiting corporate giants,” he said.
The Congress leader then turned to issues like caste-based reservations, urging the removal of the 50% cap and backing a caste census to ensure equitable representation for all communities.
