Chandigarh, 10 October, 2024: A multi-departmental team raided tobacco shops in Chandigarh’s Sector 18, imposing ₹15,200 in fines for various violations.
The team, which included officials from the health, police, excise, legal metrology, and food safety departments, conducted surprise checks across the city on late Wednesday.
Trader Ramdas was fined ₹200 for possessing loose cigarettes without the mandatory signage under Section 6A of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, according to the authorities.
Four packets of loose cigarettes worth ₹800 were destroyed.
In total, authorities seized 35 packets of imported cigarettes valued at ₹11,500 and destroyed 50 packets of loose cigarettes worth ₹10,000.
Moreover, 335 e-cigarettes (vapes) valued at ₹10 lakh were confiscated from Chaurasia’s shop, in violation of the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act. The banned items were handed over to Sector 19 police.
Imported cigarettes were also seized by excise officials for lacking required health warnings and violating customs and GST regulations.
