Chandigarh, April 5: The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is set to introduce a tiered penalty system targeting tourist buses parked illegally on municipal land. This proposal, scheduled for a House meeting on April 8, seeks to curb unauthorized parking through increasing financial markers and administrative action.
Under the new framework, a first-time violation will incur a fine of Rs 5,000, while a second offense will double to Rs 10,000. Third-time violators face a Rs 15,000 penalty. The MC stated that if a bus is found in violation for a fourth time, the corporation will formalize a request to the State Transport Authority for the permanent cancellation of the vehicle’s permit.
“Enforcement will be carried out by the Engineering Wing of the MC in coordination with the Traffic Police and the STA,” the proposal affirmed.
The move comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the formation of a committee to regulate tourist bus parking. Officials noted that the committee, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, has also approved a monthly pass system at a rate of Rs 3,000 per bus. This is in addition to the existing daily entry fee of Rs 280.
Beyond transit regulations, the MC is moving to standardize infrastructure across the city’s 144 gardens and green belts. The corporation affirmed that new norms are being formulated for the construction of public toilets in these areas. While the Horticulture Wing currently maintains standards for benches and open-air gyms, a formal policy for sanitation facilities has been absent until now.
