Chandigarh, November 11 — A Chandigarh mother has accused Uber of “gross negligence” after an app-based cab driver allegedly fled the scene of a serious accident, leaving her daughter trapped and injured inside the vehicle. The incident, which occurred near Mohali on Monday morning, has triggered widespread outrage and renewed concerns over passenger safety on ride-hailing platforms.
Shilpa Arora, co-founder and COO of Insurance Samadhan, detailed the incident in a LinkedIn post titled “Where is Uber’s Responsibility?” She wrote that her daughter was en route to college when the Uber car met with a severe crash around 7:52 am. “The impact was so strong that airbags deployed instantly,” Arora wrote, adding that the driver, though unhurt, “walked away, abandoning the terrified passengers.”
According to her account, bystanders rescued her injured daughter and rushed her to Fortis Mohali hospital, while Uber allegedly failed to reach out or assist in any form. “Can children be left at the mercy of strangers while the platform washes its hands off?” she questioned in her post, which has since gone viral.
Arora said that despite repeated attempts, Uber’s support team remained silent for hours following the incident. The company later responded under her post, stating, “Hi Shilpa, we are deeply concerned by this incident and wish your daughter a smooth recovery. A specialised team is actively investigating and has attempted to get in touch.”
In an official statement, an Uber spokesperson said, “We got in touch with the family of the injured riders as soon as this incident was brought to our attention and we wish them a speedy recovery. We have barred the driver’s access to the platform and stand ready to support authorities in case of an investigation into the accident.”
The incident has sparked strong reactions online, with users expressing sympathy and frustration over safety lapses in app-based transport. “Very sorry to hear about this accident. I hope your daughter recovers fully, quickly,” one user commented. Another wrote, “This is scary. Lack of accountability has become blatant in these times.”
While police have not yet issued a formal statement on the case, the post has reignited debate over ride-hailing accountability and the safeguards in place for young passengers.
