CHANDIGARH, March 4 — The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Wednesday carried out a targeted enforcement drive in Sector 17, impounding six abandoned vehicles that were obstructing public space. The operation, centered at the busy Bank Square, was conducted as part of a wider initiative to reclaim parking areas and ensure the smooth movement of visitors in the city’s primary commercial district.

The crackdown followed specific directives from Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar, who has ordered the removal of encroachments and unauthorized occupations in market areas. During the exercise, the enforcement wing identified six dumped vehicles belonging to Indian Bank that had been occupying public parking slots for an extended duration.

Officials stated that the presence of these stationary vehicles prevented the proper utilization of essential parking infrastructure in the high-traffic zone. To address the violation, the municipal body not only removed the cars but also issued a formal challan to the bank for the unauthorized occupation of public land.

“The drive was carried out to ensure obstruction-free public spaces,” a municipal official affirmed. He noted that such measures are necessary to maintain the urban order of Sector 17. The department maintained that regular monitoring of commercial hubs will continue to prevent the conversion of public parking lots into long-term dumping grounds for private or institutional property.
